COURSE DESCRIPTION

This web-based course builds upon a basic understanding of violence in families over the lifespan and presents a critical analysis to intervention strategies.  Inter-professional collaboration in providing intervention strategies will be emphasized.

INTENDED STUDENTS

Students in nursing, social work or related disciplines who have a particular interest in working with children, adults or the elderly who have been abused; and/or working toward strategies to prevent such abuse.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  • An appreciation and understanding of the social context in which violence occurs
  • Ability to identify the risk markers, signs and symptoms of violence in families
  • Ability to collaborate appropriately with allied professionals in responding to violence
  • Ability to develop and implement intervention as well as prevention strategies

COURSE CONTENT

The course is structured into 13 lessons with the requirement that students complete one lesson per week through the term. The lessons are as follows:

  • Introduction
  • Scope of interventions
  • Interventions with children suffering physical abuse and/or neglect
  • Child sexual abuse interventions
  • Interventions with children who witness violence
  • Sibling abuse interventions
  • Dating violence interventions
  • Sexual assault (adult) interventions
  • Interventions with survivors of intimate partner violence
  • Intervention with perpetrators of intimate partner violence
  • Elder abuse interventions
  • Professional issues in responding to family violence
  • Intervention action plans

EVALUATION

Students will be evaluated on their individual participation, their group participation, the product of their group assignment demonstrating an intervention strategy, as well as a written assignment related to a case analysis.

COURSE MATERIALS

There is no text book for the course, but there are several readings for each lesson (available either on-line or as Custom Course Materials).  In addition, most of the lessons have required viewing of videos (available on the web-site), some of which have been specifically designed to address the topics of this course.
